The peasants gathered at an appointed place and celebrated the onset of spring with freshly baked pancakes and aromatic coffee. It is impossible to establish the exact date of the appearance of Sun Coffee Day, but it is known for certain that coffee can be bought in Iceland since 1772, so the local Coffee Day can safely be called one of the oldest, if not the oldest holiday.

Ukraine. Coffee Day has been celebrated here since 2007. The celebrations take place at the end of September. Residents of Lvov are especially sensitive to this holiday, because this is where Yuri Franz Kulchitsky was from. He is famous for bringing coffee to Europe from Turkey, and then taught Europeans to drink it with the addition of milk and sugar. On Coffee Day in Ukraine, various fairs of coffee itself and tableware, and barista championships are held. Coffee shops offer original recipes and discounts.

Russia. Celebrations in honor of the invigorating drink are held in both capitals. Since 2003, Moscow has hosted the International Tea and Coffee Festival with an exhibition-fair and tastings. Celebrations are held at the end of May - following the example of Brazilian Coffee Day.

  • On this day, many manufacturers hold tastings to improve sales.
  • Various coffee ceremonies.

  • Competitions are held among professional coffee makers to prepare a coffee drink.

Local coffee market research

Moscow and St. Petersburg are Russia's two largest cities, and both cities are dominated by chain coffee shops. In 2014, there were only 1,140 coffee shops between the two cities, with Moscow having a slightly larger share. Every third Moscow and every fifth St. Petersburg cafe is owned and/or managed by a chain.

The oldest chain of coffee shops in Russia is Shokoladnitsa, which has been operating since the early 60s and has about 420 coffee shops. Other major chains in the market include Coffee House (226 locations), Coffeemania and Coffee Bean.

These coffee shops serve espresso, latte, cappuccino and other coffee classics. Since the weather does not change dramatically throughout the year, coffee drinking is not seasonal. Many coffee shops also serve a drink unique to Russia called “Raf”, which is cream, espresso and vanilla sugar whipped together.

Even though the specialty coffee industry is still relatively small compared to other countries, there are a few coffee shops that are making their mark in the market. Doubleby is a well-known local chain of specialty coffee shops that sources its own green beans before roasting them for its coffee shops in Moscow and Prague. Another well-known chain is Traveler's Coffee, with more than 100 locations throughout the country. The American-founded chain took third place at the 2021 National Coffee Roasting Championships, beating out 36 competitors. Popular drinks at Travelers Coffee are various versions of raf: floral, citrus and salted caramel.
