- It is believed that frappe was invented by a representative of the Nescafe company named Dimitris Vakondios in 1957 in Thessaloniki.
- In Greece, frappe is one of the most popular drinks and is available in almost all Greek cafes.
- The word frappe comes from the French word frapper, which means to hit like crushed ice when mixed with a drink and shaken in a shaker.
- Frappe became the hallmark of post-war Greek coffee culture.
Making a classic Greek frappe
But you don’t have to go to Greece or go to a cafe for a cool cocktail; it’s easy to make at home. To make frappe coffee at home you need very little effort and a little imagination.
A special feature of the Greek drink is its thick foam. For whipping, you will need electrical appliances: a mixer, a blender or a frappe maker.
Coffee frappe recipe
Main ingredients:
- espresso or instant coffee;
- ice;
- water;
- sugar;
- milk.

Step-by-step instructions on how to make frappe coffee

- Water – 15 ml
- Ice in cubes - for shaker and for serving

- Pour coffee into a shaker, add 15 ml of water and shake vigorously with ice for at least 15 seconds.
- Pour through a strainer into a highball glass with ice and top up with cold water.
- Insert straw and serve.
How to make frappe at home
There are several ways to prepare Greek frappe at home. Here are a few of them.
Classic recipe
Ingredients:
- a cup of cold espresso;
- a couple of spoons of condensed milk;
- ice.
Cooking process:
- Condensed milk is added to the espresso and stirred for several minutes.
- When the condensed milk has completely dissolved, fill the tall glass halfway with ice cubes.
- The drink is poured in a thin stream onto the ice.
- All ingredients are carefully mixed with a cocktail spoon.
The drink is obtained without foam.
Frappe ice recipe
Ingredients
- Iced coffee – 2 cups
- Almond milk – 2 cups
- Chocolate syrup - three 1/2 tbsp. l.
- Sugar - three 1/2 tbsp. l.
Cooking method
- Brew coffee and let cool to room temperature.
- Pour coffee into ice trays and freeze.
- Add frozen coffee cubes, almond milk, chocolate syrup and sugar to a blender.
- Beat to desired texture.
- Top the drink with whipped cream, chocolate syrup and grated chocolate.
Homemade frappe coffee recipe
To prepare an exemplary frappe based on natural coffee, we will need:
- Espresso – 50 ml or strong coffee brewed in a cezve at the rate of 2 tablespoons of ground coffee per 100 ml of water. A drink prepared in a French press or geyser coffee maker is also suitable.
- Sugar – 1-2 teaspoons.
- Ice or very chilled water in a 1:1 ratio to coffee. If you like a strong drink, then take 2 parts coffee to 1 part water or ice.
A shaker or blender with a whisk attachment will come in handy, but if you don’t have one, prepare a container with a tight-fitting lid.
How to cook?
- We brew coffee in a cezve or infuse it in a French press; if you have a coffee machine, we prepare espresso.
- Strain the finished coffee. At this stage, you can add sugar or syrup, honey to the drink.
- Cool the coffee. It should be cold, not lukewarm.
- Pour coffee into a shaker, add finely crushed ice or add well-chilled water, which can first be placed in the freezer.
- Shake the mixture of coffee and ice.
- If you don't have a shaker, you can use a blender with a whisk attachment or place the coffee mixture in a container with a tight-fitting lid and shake vigorously for a few minutes.
- The drink is ready when noticeable foam forms on its surface.
Instant coffee frappe
Frappe coffee can also be made at home from instant coffee, as was done for the first time.
What will you need?
- Instant coffee – 1.5 teaspoons.
- Cold water – 150 ml.
- Sugar – 2 teaspoons.
- Crushed ice - 2 tablespoons.
How to cook?
Option 1
- Pour instant coffee into a container, pour in water, add sugar and crushed ice.
- Close the container with a lid and shake vigorously until the coffee is completely dissolved.
- The ingredients can be shaken using a shaker or blender with a whipping attachment.
- If you don’t have kitchen equipment at hand, you can get frappe coffee by vigorously stirring it for a long time.
Option 2
There is another option for making frappe based on instant coffee
- Prepare instant coffee as usual - hot water, instant powder, sugar.
- Cool the drink.
- Add crushed ice or chilled water, 1/3 teaspoon of dry instant coffee and beat thoroughly using any of the above methods.
Instant coffee gives a high and dense foam, which frappe connoisseurs really like.
Caramel frappe recipe
Ingredients
- Ice – 4 cups
- Chilled black coffee – ½ cup
- Milk – ¼ cup
- Vanilla – 1 tsp.
- Caramel sauce or syrup - 2 tbsp. l.
Cooking method
- Beat all ingredients in a blender until smooth.
- Top the drink with whipped cream and caramel sauce.
Preparing frappe
To prepare frappe coffee, finely ground beans are used or instant coffee is used. The most important point here is to obtain thick foam, which is formed using a mixer, shaker or blender. Depending on your drinking preferences, it is not forbidden to add milk or a little sugar. The drink is drunk through a straw to experience the flavor bouquet.
Cold, it is very good in the hot season, when you simply don’t even want to drink something warm. The ice in its composition cools, and the coffee invigorates. And in winter, when you want warmth, you can add honey, milk or nuts.
Basic recipe
To diversify your coffee cocktail, you can add all kinds of fruits to it. It could be cranberry, pomegranate, pineapple, apple, peach, watermelon. There is also an egg frappe. Let's look at a basic frappe coffee recipe, which is extremely simple and only takes 7-8 minutes to prepare.
You will need:
- 2 tsp. finely ground coffee;
- granulated sugar to taste;
- 4-5 ice cubes;
- 100 ml of milk (with a fat content of at least 2.5%);
- ¼ glass of water (50-60 ml).
How to cook:
- Brew a regular shot of espresso and pour it into a shaker.
- Then add sugar, the amount depends on how sweet your coffee is. Shake it up. As a result, we get a dense foam with a pleasant smell.
- Place ice cubes in a tall glass or Irish glass.
- The last stage of preparing a cocktail is to pour the resulting foamy substance into a glass with ice, add milk, mix everything and drink it with pleasure through a straw.
You can also use cream instead of milk.
With cherries or “Cherry Orchard”
For a variety of flavors, you can prepare frappe with cherries at home. The amount of ingredients is indicated per serving.
You will need:
- 100-120 ml espresso;
- 4-5 ice cubes;
- 5 g pitted cherries;
- 2 cherries on a branch.
How to cook:
- First, brew strong espresso.
- The pitted cherries are placed in the freezer for a short period of time, just to cool but not freeze.
- Pitted cherries are whipped with a blender and placed in tall glasses on stems with pre-crushed ice.

- 100 ml espresso;
- 75 ml milk;
- 20 g chocolate (dark);
- 1 tsp. honey (preferably flower);
- 4-5 ice cubes.
How to cook:
- Fill 2/3 of the prepared glasses with ice.
- Next, make espresso, cool, mix with milk, grated chocolate (reserve a little for decoration) and honey.
- Then everything is mixed in a shaker until foam forms or whipped in a blender.
- The resulting mixture is slowly poured along the walls into a glass with ice, so as not to damage the foam.
The top is decorated with chocolate and drunk through a straw.
Drinking frappe in Greek style
Greek coffee frappe has gained great popularity in Cyprus. Cypriots consider it one of their national drinks and are proud of it. In general, we can say that drinking frappe for the islanders is a way of having a good time. You can make a classic Greek drink at home.

- Cream or milk – 35-40 ml.

Mint Frappe with strawberries

First, mix all the ingredients that make up the classic Frappe recipe. Then strawberries, sugar and milk are crushed using a blender. The resulting coffee is first poured into a glass with crushed ice, then the milk-strawberry mixture. Top is decorated with a mint leaf.
Vanilla Frappe
To a classic Greek coffee recipe, add a couple of drops of vanilla syrup, which changes the aroma of the finished drink.
Winter recipe
Ingredients:
- Double espresso - 200 ml.
- Milk - 150 ml.
- Dark chocolate - approximately 50 g.
- Flower honey - to taste, but 2 teaspoons are recommended.
- At least 10 ice cubes.

Ingredients:
- Double espresso - 200 ml.
- Milk - 100 ml.
- Ice cream - it is recommended to take 100 g.
- At least 8 ice cubes.
- Dark chocolate, which should be grated in advance.
First, mix ice cream and milk in a blender, then pour the cured mixture into a glass, the bottom of which must first be filled with crushed ice. The coffee is poured in at the very last and is not stirred, as this results in beautiful patterns on the bottom layer. You can decorate the top with grated chocolate.
How to make a mint frappe
Add a mint leaf to the classic recipe and let the drink sit for 4 minutes.
Another method calls for making a frappe with ice cream, then adding mint, after cutting the leaf into several strips to add a minty flavor.
The third option involves preliminary preparation. This is what lovers of mint flavor do. Mint is brewed with boiling water, allowed to cool, and frozen in the refrigerator. After this, it is added to the classic frappe recipe, or to the version with ice cream. This drink has a rich mint taste. It's easy to make at home.
Strawberry frappe
Strawberries, combined with ice, give a special taste to the coffee drink. All you need to do is whisk strawberries and milk and pour the contents into a glass with ice. It is added around the edges so as not to knock down the foam. You can add ice cream along with milk.
Another recipe suggests using strawberry puree instead of whole berries. Place the finished puree in a separate layer on top of the ice. The coffee is carefully poured on top. The drink has a pleasant strawberry flavor.
Aojiru
- Cabbage leaves (if it’s hard to find kale, you can use white cabbage) - 200 g
- Barley sprouts – 150 gr
- Celery stalk – 50 g
- Cold water or milk – 200 ml
Chop the cabbage, barley sprouts and celery, mix, grind in a blender and strain. Pour into a glass. Dilute with cold water or milk. You can add sugar.
