Some people do not see the difference at all between instant coffee and an invigorating drink made from ground beans. They simply pour a couple of spoons of freeze-dried granules into a cup and pour boiling water over them. But real coffee lovers know a lot about preparing an aromatic and invigorating drink. To do this, they use ground coffee, which is obtained from pre-roasted beans. But the methods of preparing the drink may differ. It all depends on what devices for this are at hand at the moment. In our article we will tell you how to prepare ground coffee using a Turk, a coffee maker, a microwave, a saucepan or an ordinary cup. Let's look at these and other methods in more detail.
How to prepare ground coffee correctly?
True connoisseurs of an aromatic and invigorating drink must adhere to the following rules during its preparation:
- Ground coffee must be fresh. This means that a minimum of time should pass from the moment the beans are roasted, or rather, no more than three weeks.
- All the taste and aroma of the drink is contained in the essential oils contained in the grains. When exposed to air, they begin to oxidize, making the coffee taste poorer. To make the drink tastier, no more than 1 hour should pass from the moment of grinding the grains.
- Ground coffee can be stored in a place protected from light and moisture for 3 weeks. If you need to increase its shelf life, it is recommended to place a sealed bag with ground grains in the freezer.
- Another rule regarding how to make ground coffee at home concerns the grind level. For Turkish grains, you need to grind the grains as much as possible. But coarse grinding is also suitable for a French press.
- The quality of water is an equally important point in preparing an invigorating drink. It is recommended to use purified or spring water with a low degree of mineralization.
Preparation
Regardless of the chosen cooking method, there are a number of general points that require attention:
1. Selection of grains. And it is really extensive - different varieties of coffee (mainly Arabica and Robusta subspecies), grown in different regions, with varying degrees of roasting. You may have to try at least a dozen types to choose the best option for yourself. You can simplify the task a little if you read in advance about the characteristics of the varieties and stages of roasting, and check your preferences.
The stronger the roast, the stronger and richer the drink will be. The intensity is indicated on the packaging in the form of a row of coffee beans, of which several are colored - the number of colored beans corresponds to the degree of roasting - from 1 to 6.
Particularly advanced coffee lovers prefer to roast the beans themselves. To do this, green coffee of the selected variety (or a mixture of different ones) is slowly heated in a heavy, thick frying pan, stirring constantly. This process requires experience and skill, because a drink made from over-roasted grains will be bitter, and from under-roasted grains it will be weak and with pronounced sourness.
In addition, it makes sense to pay attention to the date of manufacture (for roasted coffee beans in original packaging). The purchase of a product no older than 1 month can be considered truly successful.
- Grinding coffee beans. It is believed that it is best to grind coffee immediately before brewing. In this case, the drink will receive the most intense taste and aroma. When stored in ground form, it partially loses its properties. The best container for ground coffee is glass or porcelain with an airtight lid; the product can be stored in it for up to a week. It is also better to keep whole grains in such a container in order to preserve their freshness as much as possible.
There is no big difference between grinding beans in a manual coffee grinder or an electric one (you can even use a blender, but only for coarse grinding). The size of the particles matters - coarse and medium grinds are suitable for coffee machines; for cooking in a Turk, it is better to use medium or finely ground coffee.
- Water. The taste of the finished drink largely depends on the quality of the water used for cooking. Preference should be given to bottled or filtered water. The worst option is chlorinated tap water.
- Dishes. There are different ways to brew coffee at home. It can be prepared in a Turk (cezve), in a so-called “French press”, in a coffee machine and even in a cup.
When choosing a Turk, pay attention to the material from which it is made and the shape of the product. Ceramic and copper Turks are considered the best. It is important that the neck is narrow - significantly smaller than the base.
Features of making Turkish coffee
This method has been known since the 16th century. Making coffee in a Turkish coffee pot has a number of advantages, most of which are due to the special shape of the container. The classic cezve is made in the shape of a cone, which allows you to fully reveal the taste and aroma of ground grains with the formation of thick foam.
You can prepare ground coffee in a Turk, both from copper and ceramics, in the following order:
- Grind the beans in a burr coffee grinder. Only in this case can you achieve perfect grinding (almost like flour). To prepare a strong drink, you need to take 10 g of coffee per 100 ml of water.
- Pour the required amount of ground grains and 10 g of sugar into the Turk.
- Pour 100 ml of water. In this case, the contents of the Turk do not need to be mixed.
- Place the cezve on low heat.
- Heat the contents of the Turk until the foam rises to the edges, then remove it from the heat. It is important not to miss this moment so that the coffee does not spill out of the cezve.
- Wait until the foam settles, then return the Turk to the fire again. Repeat the same action 3 times.
- Wait 2 minutes for the drink to brew and pour it into cups.
Aeropress
One of the simplest methods of making coffee after the French press. It was invented relatively recently - in 2009. Very easy to use, small, you can even take it with you on a hike. Its operating principle is the piston method. This is a cylinder into which another cylinder, a paper filter and a perforated plug are inserted. Next, pour in 8-18 grams of finely ground coffee, add water at 88-94 degrees, and infuse the coffee. The advantage of the method: a pure drink without particles. It is important that the coffee is freshly ground and the dishes are hot. Preparing coffee in an AeroPress will take you about 3 minutes, its average cost is from 2,000 rubles.
How to make ground coffee without a Turk?
Lovers of an invigorating drink should not be upset if they do not have a cezve on hand. They can prepare aromatic coffee without a Turk, using:
- geyser coffee maker;
- French press;
- AeroPress;
- coffee machine;
- Chemex;
- microwave;
- pan.
Let's look at each method in more detail. But first, let's look at the simplest of them, which is how to prepare ground coffee directly in a cup. There is no doubt that the drink will turn out tasty and invigorating.
Purover
A method similar to the Chemex brewing method. The difference is that when a filter is inserted into a Chemex, it must fit snugly into the flask, whereas a pour-over has small raised grooves in the funnel into which the filter is inserted. When the filter is inserted, you need to pour water on top and make sure that it fits only along the grooves and that there is oxygen access inside. A pourover is a regular funnel into which a filter is inserted. You can put it in a cup or a teapot at once - wherever is convenient for you. Add 8-9 grams of medium-ground coffee per 100 grams of water. Another difference between a pour-over and a Chemex is that it is smaller and more compact, so you can put it anywhere and take it with you. In 4-5 minutes your coffee is ready. The price of a pourover is up to 2000 rubles.
Preparing coffee in a cup
Real coffee lovers never use this method. They believe that simply brewing ground beans in a cup will never achieve the ideal taste and aroma of coffee. But in some cases, even a portion of a quick-cooked drink will help you cheer up and gain strength.
The following sequence of steps will tell you how to prepare ground coffee in a cup:
- Prepare two teaspoons of ground Arabica beans, 100 ml of water and sugar to taste.
- Boil purified drinking water. It is important that when brewing the temperature of the liquid is not lower than 90 °C.
- Pour ground grains, sugar into a cup and pour boiling water over them.
- Cover the cup with a lid and leave on the counter for 10 minutes. During this time, the drink will infuse and be ready for use.
How to brew an invigorating drink in a geyser coffee maker?
You can prepare classic espresso using this device like this:
- Unscrew the top of the coffee maker and remove the filter.
- Pour the required amount of water into the lower part of the coffee maker.
- Pour ground grains into the filter at the rate of 1.5 teaspoons per serving. Lightly compact them.
- Assemble the coffee maker by screwing the top part. The finished drink will flow into it.
- Place the coffee maker on medium heat. Wait until steam starts to rise from the spout and immediately remove the appliance from the stove. In 10 seconds the drink will be ready. All that remains is to pour it into cups.
Thanks to this method, you can prepare coffee from ground beans both on a gas stove and on an electric one.
Preparation in a coffee machine
Using an automatic coffee machine is the fastest and easiest way to prepare a flavorful drink. It is enough to carefully study the instructions for the device and you can safely proceed to action. You can prepare ground coffee in a coffee machine, both coarse and fine grind, and it will turn out equally tasty in both the first and second cases.
The operating instructions for most modern models of coffee machines are as follows:
- Pour water into a special reservoir. The volume of liquid depends on the number of cups.
- Fill the coffee compartment with beans. For a capsule coffee machine, a capsule with compressed ground coffee is inserted into a special hole in the capsule receptacle.
- The prepared cup is placed under the nozzle of the coffee machine, after which the “Start” button is pressed.
- After about 30 seconds, the coffee brewing process will be completed and you can enjoy the taste of your favorite drink.
French press for making coffee
It’s not difficult to brew an invigorating drink using a French press. Visually, a French press is a special closed container with a piston. To prepare a drink using this device, coarse coffee beans are required. Otherwise, it will be more difficult to push the piston with the filter. But grinding does not affect the taste of the drink. In any case, the coffee will be excellent.
The cooking process consists of the following steps:
- Boil water in a kettle, then let it cool slightly to a temperature of 90-95 °C.
- Pour ground coffee into a French press at the rate of 7 g per 100 ml of liquid.
- Pour a small amount of water (about 100 ml) into the container and stir the coffee with a spoon.
- Wait exactly 1 minute, then pour the remaining water into the French press.
- Close the container with a lid. Wait another 3 minutes.
- Carefully lower the piston all the way. Pour the drink into preheated cups.
Alternative methods
Progress does not stand still, and therefore alternative devices were invented for making coffee:
- Aeropress - consists of a piston, cylinder, cover and replaceable filter. The device is installed on the cup. Coffee is prepared by pouring finely ground beans into a cylinder through a filter and adding hot water. Then a piston is inserted into the cylinder, pressed and the water is forced through the coffee. The finished drink goes into the cup, and the grounds remain in the filter.
- Chemex - consists of a glass vessel similar in shape to an hourglass and a paper filter. Coffee is poured into the filter and hot water is added in spills. Cooking time 3 minutes;
- pour over – consists of a funnel with a filter and a container for brewing coffee. Water temperature 95°C. A thin stream of water is poured into the funnel with coffee at an angle. The cooking process takes 2 minutes. The drink tastes similar to espresso;
- Siphon is the most underused but spectacular cooking method. Involves the use of two vessels and a burner. Hot water is poured into one, coffee into the other. After heating and creating steam from the water, the coffee is brewed.
Perhaps alternative methods will seem complicated and inconvenient. This is not entirely true. It’s just that they are still a new product and are not used to them, preferring more familiar methods of brewing coffee, considering them correct and convenient.
There are many options for preparing cold and hot invigorating drinks. Everything for cooking can be purchased at the store, and good grains can be ordered at the roasting shop. A little time, patience and love will give an amazing result in the form of a cup of aromatic and tasty drink.
How to brew coffee using a Chemex?
Not all people have the opportunity to purchase a professional coffee machine. But this does not mean that they cannot enjoy the taste of good coffee. One alternative way to brew a drink is to use a special device called a Chemex. Visually, it is a glass flask, shaped like an hourglass, made from a paper filter. All that remains is to figure out how to prepare ground coffee using this device. Step-by-step actions in this case will be as follows:
- Moisten the paper filter with clean water.
- Pour the required amount of ground coffee into it.
- Prepare hot water (temperature 90-94 °C).
- Carefully and slowly pour water into the filter up to the 450 ml mark (for 32 g of ground coffee).
- In 4 minutes the drink will be ready. It should be noted that the coarser the grind, the longer the coffee needs to brew.
How to grind coffee without a coffee grinder
After roasting, it is better to leave the grains uncovered in a flat container to cool. You can grind no earlier than after 10 hours. And this can be done even without a coffee grinder. Every housewife has more than one kitchen device that helps with grinding:
- blender (put no more than 100 g of raw materials);
- food processor;
- meat grinder (only coarse grinding is obtained);
- spice grinder.
Raw materials are successfully prepared for brewing even without the use of mechanical and electrical devices, as our ancestors did. At the same time, a tasty, aromatic drink was brewed from grains. Among the manual grinding methods we highlight:
- mortar and pestle;
- rolling pin;
- chop hammer.

How to brew coffee in the microwave?
There are many different ways to prepare ground coffee. In the microwave is one of them. The main advantage of this method is the high cooking speed. However, in terms of taste, coffee brewed in a microwave is much inferior to that prepared in a Turkish coffee pot or coffee maker. But it is worth noting that people who are open to experimentation will also be interested in this method.
The sequence of actions during the preparation process will be as follows:
- Prepare a transparent cup made of special glass. Put ground coffee in it at the rate of 3 teaspoons per 200 ml of liquid
- Fill the cup with water to 2/3 of its volume and place it in the microwave.
- Set the power to maximum value.
- Watch the cup carefully in the microwave. As soon as foam begins to rise above the surface of the liquid, the microwave must be turned off.
- Leave the cup in the microwave for 2-3 minutes. During this time, the coffee will brew better and the grounds will sink to the bottom.
How about a cup of instant coffee?
Instant coffee contains no more than 15% coffee itself. The rest is flavoring additives, preservatives, dyes, oxidizing agents, etc. There is absolutely nothing healthy in this coffee, but rather the opposite. Instant coffee is often the cause of stomach ulcers, gastritis and cellulite. Instant coffee contains a very harmful substance – benzopyrene resin. This resin is an oxidizing agent and it has a strong effect on the body.
As for drinking natural coffee, in moderate quantities it does not harm, but benefits a healthy person. The only contraindication is high blood pressure. A harmless amount of coffee for the body is a cup or two a day.
How to make coffee in a saucepan?
This method is ideal for those people who want to brew an invigorating drink for a large company without using a French press, Turk or coffee machine. The following step-by-step instructions will tell you how to prepare ground coffee in a saucepan:
- Place the ground beans in an enamel pan at the rate of 2 teaspoons of coffee for every 100 ml of water. Gently mix the ingredients with a tablespoon.
- Place the pan on the stove over low heat. While heating, stir the drink again once or twice.
- Wait until a thick foam appears on the surface of the liquid, then remove the pan from the stove. It is important not to bring the liquid to a boil. Otherwise, the coffee will lose some of its taste and aroma.
- Cover the dish with a tight lid and let the drink brew under it for 5 minutes. This time will be enough for the coffee grounds to settle to the bottom.
- Pour the finished drink into cups using a small ladle.
It is recommended to pour the remaining coffee into a thermos.
How to roast coffee beans at home?
Are you ready to put in a little effort to appreciate the taste of freshly roasted coffee?
How to do this correctly? In a frying pan. In the kitchen of a true coffee connoisseur, you will definitely find not only a Turk, but also a deep and wide frying pan. This is where experts recommend roasting coffee beans. You can also use a regular frying pan - the main thing is that it is clean, as excess odors can ruin your morning. To begin, you need to rinse the grains and let them dry on a towel for 30 minutes. Next, you should place them in a thin layer on an already preheated frying pan and fry for 7-25 minutes, depending on taste preferences, constantly stirring with a wooden spatula. After removing from the heat, the grains should be left to cool on a tray or other flat dish.
In the oven. It is better to use a baking tray with many small holes. The grains should be roasted in an oven preheated to 230°C for 15-20 minutes, stirring and checking the degree of readiness every 2 minutes.
It is not recommended to grind the beans immediately after roasting. Leave them in an open container for 10 hours.
If you decide to roast yourself, then buy “green” beans.
