For preparation you will need:
- vanilla sugar - 1 sachet;
- alcohol 50% - 0.5 l;
- water - 0.7 l;
- ground coffee - 60 g;
- granulated sugar - 500 g.

Cooking sequence:
- Pour water (500 ml) into the coffee and cook at low boil for a quarter of an hour.
- Boil a thick syrup from the remaining water and sugar.
- Add vanillin to the prepared sweet mixture and mix everything thoroughly.
- Pour brewed coffee into the syrup cooled to room temperature and stir well.
- Pour in alcohol in a slow stream and thoroughly mix all the ingredients again.

On vodka
This preparation option also involves the use of ground coffee, but vodka acts as the alcoholic base. Therefore, the finished liqueur will taste softer and have a lower strength.
Components for making at home:
- freshly squeezed lemon juice - 1 tbsp;
- vodka - 1000 ml;
- ground coffee - 50 g;
- granulated sugar - 250 g;
- water - 250 ml.

This coffee liqueur is prepared as follows:
- From the entire volume of water and ground coffee you need to brew a drink. Leave it for 24 hours in a tightly closed container.
- After 24 hours, strain the coffee, add sugar and pour in vodka.
- Over low heat with constant stirring, heat the liquid to 50 degrees and keep on the stove until all the sugar has dissolved.
- Remove the liqueur from the heat and add lemon juice.
- Pour the drink into bottles and keep in a cool place for 5 days to stabilize the taste and aroma.
You can also use ground coffee in this recipe. In this case, the same amount of ingredients will require 80 g.
On moonshine
The most ardent adherents of truly homemade alcoholic drinks will love this recipe.
Here the main ingredient is moonshine, the main thing is that it is of high quality and does not have a pronounced unpleasant aroma.
The liqueur is prepared as follows:
- In a saucepan, prepare a drink from 90 g of ground coffee and one and a half glasses of water.
- Add 600 g of granulated sugar to the prepared liquid and heat the mixture over low heat until it is completely dissolved.
- Cool the resulting syrup at room temperature.
- Slowly pour 0.7 liters of moonshine into it and stir well.
- Put 1 vanilla pod into a bottle or pour 10 ml of vanilla extract, then pour in the liqueur and put in a cool, dark place for 28 days.
After the aging period has expired, strain the liqueur and can be served.
Reference! In all recipes, it is best to use distilled or filtered water to soften the taste of the finished liqueur.
In the video, an experienced moonshiner shows how to prepare coffee liqueur based on moonshine:

What is liqueur
Liqueur is a rather sweet alcoholic drink with a persistent aroma. Fruit and berry juices are used as the basis for its production, and herbal infusions are added. The strength of drinks varies greatly depending on what was used as raw material and the technology used to make the drink. Manufacturers produce drinks with alcohol content from 15% to 75%.
Famous liqueurs would not have appeared if it were not for the desire of a medieval man to find an elixir that would give eternal life. Monks, alchemists and doctors experimented with the ingredients in every possible way, producing a wide variety of types of liqueur. Some of these drinks were even named after knightly orders. Some recipes are still used today by companies producing alcoholic beverages.
From Mexico with love: imitation Kahlua coffee liqueur in detail
It can be said that Kahlua coffee liqueur is the pure embodiment of a regional product. Every drop is created in Mexico, using ingredients grown in the state of Veracruz, just three hours east of Mexico City. At first it will seem that it will be very difficult to recreate such a drink at home. But if you arm yourself with the knowledge scattered bits and pieces on the Internet, preparing a decent imitation of this amazing liqueur is very simple.
What are we going to deal with? Created in the Mexican state of Yucatan in 1936 by four enterprising amigos, Kahlua is the world's original and best-selling coffee liqueur. It is made by mixing roasted and coarsely ground Arabica coffee beans with water, cane alcohol and vanilla extract. Before bottling, the drink rests for eight weeks and is tinted with caramel syrup for a rich, dark brown color.

To date (April 2019), the Kahlua line, owned by the Pernod Ricard holding, includes 7 separate coffee liqueurs: the original Kahlua, a strong version of Kahlúa Especial, Kahlúa Chili Chocolate (chili and chocolate), Kahlúa Mint Mocha (mint and chocolate), Kahlúa Salted Caramel, Kahlúa French Vanilla and Espresso Martini. We will try to make the original Kahlua, but with a proper understanding of homemade drinks, making other versions of the coffee liqueur will not be at all difficult.

To make a truly close imitation of Kahlua, you'll have to do some research. Fortunately, there are landmarks and there are many of them. What we know about the production of Mexican coffee liqueur at the moment:
p, blockquote 4,0,0,0,0 —>
- Coffee . Arabica from the state of Veracruz. Slow roasting at lower than normal temperatures, resulting in less caramelization of the sugars and generally a stronger coffee flavor with high acidity and medium body. Grinding is coarse, brewing is cold (Cold Brew).
Conclusion: it is optimal to use medium-roasted Arabica beans, coarsely ground (preferably in a burr grinder - this preserves a more precise acidity), as for a French press, or a little finer (but coarser than for espresso), cold brewing is preferable, which produces a less bitter and soft extract.
p, blockquote 5,0,1,0,0 —>
Spied on production in Veracruz.
- Vanillin . Kahlúa factories use vanilla extract made from vanilla beans also grown in Veracruz. The technology for its preparation remains a “brand secret,” but it is unlikely to differ much from the standard preparation of the extract.
Conclusion: it is optimal to use vanilla extract, but the equivalent in the form of vanilla pods remains a workable option (on average 1 tsp of extract = 2.5 cm of vanilla pod with seeds). Vanilla sugar will not be an equivalent substitute, but in the absence of anything else, you can use it (1 tsp extract = 10-15 g of sugar). We recommend discarding vanillin immediately - its strong chemical taste and complexity in weighing are not compatible with the desired delicate taste balance.
p, blockquote 6,0,0,0,0 —>
- Alcohol . Another “brand secret”, but it is known for sure that this is cane alcohol obtained from cane sugar. Original (classic) Kahlua contains 20% alcohol by volume (21.5% for the US state of Ohio). Until 2004, the strength of the liqueur was 26.5% alcohol by volume. The Kahlua line also includes a stronger version of the liqueur, Kahlúa Especial, which contains 35% alcohol.
Conclusion: it is optimal to use rum with a fairly pronounced taste of cane raw materials. For moonshiners, we recommend paying attention to our recipes for rums made from molasses, which give just such a drink (look towards more refined rum with “rum oils”, the second recipe in the material).

Sugar cane plantation for Kahlua in Veracruz.
- Sugar . There is a big gap here, since it was not possible to find reliable information about its addition anywhere (it is only known that caramel coloring is added to the liqueur for color). At the same time, the manufacturer’s official website states that the original Kahlua contains 44 g/100 ml of sugar. They usually write that corn syrup is added to it, but this is not accurate (although it looks like the truth).

Not everyone likes the sweet drink in its pure form. How can I dilute it so as not to spoil the taste? We recommend the following options:
- Mineral water without carbonation reduces the strength of the liqueur and does not affect its taste.
- Fresh milk goes well with drinks made with cream or condensed milk.
- Tea and coffee - even a few drops of liqueur added to the cup will give them a special aroma.
- Spirits - will dilute your liquor, but make it much stronger. For this purpose, vodka, light rum and gin are used. But you shouldn’t conduct such experiments with champagne, cognac and wine.
We will be glad if you enjoy making your own aromatic coffee liqueur. The recipe at home, as you can already see, is quite simple. Therefore, choose any one and surprise your guests with an original sweet drink.
What types of liqueurs are there?
Liqueur is a drink infused with alcohol and herbs, fruits, berries and other ingredients. The basis of the drink can be not only pure alcohol, but also ready-made alcohol: whiskey, rum, cognac and others. Unlike other alcoholic drinks, liqueur almost always contains a large amount of sugar, but there are options that are not at all sweet, but rather tart, which will be more to the taste of men.
Based on strength, drinks are divided into the following categories:
- Strong (38-50% alcohol) - most often used for making cocktails; in their pure form they are consumed in small quantities with the addition of ice.
- Medium strength (25-35%) - they are also called dessert liqueurs, since mainly fruit liqueurs are made with this percentage of strength, which add a piquant taste and aroma to baked goods and confectionery. They are also added to hot and cold drinks and cocktails. They are distinguished by a large amount of sugar.
- Light (15-25%) - cream and butter liqueurs usually have this strength. These are drinks based on cream and eggs. They have a rather thick consistency and sweet taste. They are an ideal addition to coffee or tea.
