What is the difference between a latte and a cappuccino?

Both latte and cappuccino are coffee drinks. The differences between them are manifested in the percentage of all ingredients. A latte contains significantly less coffee than a cappuccino. Therefore, a latte is considered a coffee cocktail, and a cappuccino is a type of coffee.

Proportions:

  • The ratio of the parts in a latte is ⅔ hot steamed milk and ⅓ espresso.
  • The ratio of parts in a cappuccino is ⅓ hot milk, ⅓ milk foam and ⅓ espresso.

Schematic difference between drinks from each other
Based on the proportions, a cappuccino contains half as much milk as a latte. The top layer is formed by milk foam, which does not mix with the lower layers of the drink. In a latte, the whipped foam is formed by mixing milk and coffee.

Another difference between the drinks is the layers. There will be at least three of them in a latte, while a cappuccino should have two layers.

When pronouncing Latte, it is correct to place the stress on the first syllable.

Latte and cappuccino can be used as a noun in the masculine or neuter gender. Accordingly, “delicious latte” and “hot latte”, “delicious cappuccino” and “hot cappuccino” are the correct pronunciation.

Mysterious latte coffee recipe

The basis of the latte recipe, this delicious drink, is milk. There is very little coffee here - a little, as you noticed from the ratio of the numbers given above. The components are purely individual for each taste.

But, if we take the classics, then espresso in a latte is 1/10. Although there is little coffee, the drink captivates with the aroma of espresso. Thanks to improvements in technology, it is now possible to use coffee machines to make latte coffee.

The ingredients remain the same, but you can create a drink using ambiguous recipes with their own characteristics. The tandem of machine and man is obvious.

For machines, preparing cocktails is a matter of minutes, but a person, receiving a dose of inspiration and help from a coffee machine, can easily prepare such magical, aromatic drinks at home. Imagine and create new cocktails. At first glance, everything is simple, but as soon as you take up something, it doesn’t work out. Let's remember some recipes and try to cook it together.

How to properly prepare a coffee base

The basis for the drink should be espresso brewed in a Turk or geyser coffee maker. To brew 60 ml (double portion) of high-quality espresso you will need:

  • 18-22 grams of coffee. The ideal ratio of varieties is 80% Arabica and 20% Robusta. With 100% Arabica, the drink turns out sour and weak, the ingredients do not combine well.
  • 60 ml water.
  • Flavorings as desired.

If you don't have a food scale, simply add 2 teaspoons of ground coffee to 100 ml (half a cup) of water.

The container from which coffee is poured into milk should have a thin spout. The finer the stream, the more foamy the drink remains.

To avoid ruining the integrity of the drink, mix the sugar in the coffee until all the ingredients are combined. The same applies to rum, liqueur, syrup, cognac and toppings.

Traditional classic latte

For some coffee lovers, a latte is a common drink with milk. That is, they are not aware of making a classic latte. But the trick is that the base is considered to be hot milk and a minimal amount of foam. If you take 150 ml of dairy product, then you will need 30-50 grams of ground coffee.

In some coffee shops, the preparation system and the amount of ingredients are interpreted.

Frothing milk for coffee

To get thick foam, be sure to heat the milk to a temperature of 50-70 degrees before whipping. Visually, at this temperature, steam and light foam appear, but there are no bubbles characteristic of boiling. For more accurate measurements, it is convenient to use a kitchen thermometer.

A logical question immediately arises: what fat content of milk is best?

  • Low-fat milk from 0.5 to 1.5% froths well and does not have a pronounced taste.
  • Milk from 1.5 to 3.5% produces less foam, but gives the drink a richer taste.

The easiest way to whip milk until thick foam is to use a blender, mixer or hand-held battery-powered milk frother.

If you don’t have the equipment, you can froth the milk using alternative devices:

  • kitchen whisk;
  • French press;
  • forks;
  • an ordinary glass jar with a lid or a plastic bottle;
  • athletes can shake milk in a durable protein shaker.

The average whipping time ranges from 40 seconds for automatic to 5 minutes for manual means.

There is a general requirement for latte and cappuccino foam: it must be homogeneous without excess air bubbles. To separate the milk and foam, the top foamy layer can be held with a tablespoon or very carefully poured into a cup or glass. After this, the milk is immediately mixed with espresso.
