Cleaning the coffee machine from scale (decalcification).

Decalcification is the removal of calcium (scale, lime) deposits in the heating elements (heating element, boiler, thermoblock) of a coffee machine using chemical compounds (adipic acid). Essentially, this is simply running a chemical through the entire water supply system with short time delays.

The formation of salt deposits occurs throughout the entire hydraulic system, both before and after the heating elements. The higher the water temperature, the faster plaque formation occurs. At water temperatures below 40°C, the formation of salt deposits occurs many times slower, but still occurs. This means that an unnoticeable deposit also forms in the water tank, which needs to be cleaned from time to time with a brush (for some models of Delonghi coffee machines it is supplied with a brush and has long bristles).

How to determine water hardness? In order to quickly determine the hardness of the water you pour into the coffee machine, just look into the kettle. A large layer of white deposits on the heating element or bottom indicates very hard water. Floating white or slightly yellowish flakes inside the kettle also indicate a high calcium content in the water. If you are not using a kettle, put water in a dark-bottomed saucepan, place it on the stove and bring it to a boil. Let the water cool. If a white coating has formed on the walls and bottom of the pan, this means that the water is very hard with a high calcium content.

Often on TV screens we are told about using a home filter-jug of the “Barrier” type. Unfortunately, these filters do not fully purify tap water; rather, they are designed to catch bolts and nuts. The water from such a filter still remains highly cruel. The highest degree of purification at home can be provided by modern filters such as the American “Atol” and “Barrier”, which have a high 5-stage degree of purification. The water from this filter is very soft and is better suited for use in coffee machines. The quality of water and its hardness directly affects the taste of coffee.

Modern coffee machines such as DeLonghi ECAM 28.465 M PrimaDonna S, Philips Saeco HD 8943/19 Xelsis are equipped with adjustable water hardness levels in 4 ranges.

What is a decalcification program?

Almost all modern Delonghi coffee machines and others have a descaling program installed (decalcification, calc, descale). When the display signals you to clean the hydraulic system, prepare a chemical and 30 minutes of free time. The decalcification program is usually launched by pressing certain buttons or through the menu. Descaling is always done through a boiling water and steam tap, sometimes through drainage. In Delonghi coffee machines type ECAM 23.460/23.464 this device is called a “water supply unit” (a removable plastic L-shaped tap).

After starting the program, it is necessary to dilute the chemical agent (in Delonghi premium coffee machines, 100 ml of liquid is included) with water in a volume of 0.5 liters, taking into account the product itself. Pour the diluted solution into a water container (reservoir). Do not pour more than 0.5 liters (unless the manufacturer has given specific instructions) otherwise too much water will not give the desired consistency and the effect will be practically zero.

Then everything is strictly according to the instructions, never stop the decalcification program. If, for some reason, you still did not complete the cleaning, then when you have such an opportunity, you will have to start everything from the very beginning! How to start the decalcification program, read the instructions.

How often should I decalcify?

It is important to know here that the coffee machine does not have any sensors that determine the degree of contamination of the hydraulic system. The machine understands only those parameters that you set for it when you first started it (set the degree of water hardness in the settings). If you haven’t installed anything, then the default water hardness setting is the factory setting (maximum). After reading the operating instructions, you will learn how to set the water hardness level in the coffee machine settings (if provided). Depending on the indicators that you set, the coffee machine will count the amount of water passed through the system.

DeLonghi and Philips Saeco premium coffee machines have mini computers that count how many cups of coffee and what type have been prepared over time. With a water hardness of 2 units (soft water), approximately every 150-170 cups, the coffee machine will descale.

The higher the water hardness index, from 1 (softer) to 4 (harder), the more often the coffee machine will signal the need to descale. Some coffee machines (Jura, Bosch, Siemens) have a different metric for setting the hardness, but the essence is the same, the higher the indicator, the harder the water. Returning to the question - how often? For example, with low coffee consumption, once every 2-3 months, with an amount of 20-50 cups per day, at least once every 1-1.5 months. Remember that too much limescale will affect the taste of the coffee.

What means should I use to descale?

Almost every coffee machine manufacturer produces its own descaling products. Do you think the Delonghi descaling product can be harmful if you use it in a Jura coffee machine and vice versa? This is provided that all automatic coffee machines operate on the same principle. We are sure not! But the manufacturer strongly recommends using this product. The official answer to the question is “Why?” It sounds like this: the internal parts of the hydraulic system and some connecting elements can be made from different materials from all manufacturers, and in order to avoid premature destruction and corrosion, it is better to use what the manufacturer recommends. Not the official version - promoting the brand’s own brand and increasing sales of consumables. The only thing we agree on is that it is not advisable to use vinegar.

Why does the coffee machine not require decalcification?

It happens that for 2 years of operation the user did not know about the existence of a decalcification program. The coffee machine never asked the user to do this. This especially applies to coffee machines that have a water filter installed in the water hopper. It’s simple, the coffee machine is designed so that if the “water filter installed” function is enabled in the menu, the descaling program is disabled. The machine thinks that the water is being purified by its high-quality filter.

Returning to water hardness. Delonghi coffee machines often use an English “Brita” or “Intensa” filter, both of which are not cheap, and both of them are not much better than the Russian Barrier. From our experience, if you initially use soft water purified with 4-5 stage filters, then you don’t need a filter at all. The heating element will always remain clean for many years. But as we wrote earlier, home coffee machines do not have sensors that could determine the composition of water and its hardness, but there is a portion counter, which means the coffee machine will still ask for descaling, which in essence in this case will be conditional.

What not to do!

During decalcification, you must not add water to the hopper unless the coffee machine asks you to do so (vocally). You should also not remove the tray, brew unit, drip tray or anything else while the program is running, again unless you are asked to do so. It is also not recommended to turn off the coffee machine while descaling, unless the manufacturer has provided a program pause function. Strictly follow the step-by-step procedure described in the instructions.

Today, even the simplest coffee machines such as Delongi ESAM 2600 and Delongi ESAM 4200 have a decalcification function. This is the same basic function as adjusting the strength of the drink and its quantity.

Jura descaling tablets

If you used a Jura coffee machine without a filter or decided not to change the filter to a new one, then you will encounter a problem such as scale formation on the working surfaces of the unit.

The quality and composition of the water used, especially if it contains a lot of minerals, calcium and fluorine, contributes to the rapid formation of scale in the coffee machine. This leads us to the need to completely descale the coffee machine so that any particles do not accidentally fall into the cup of coffee.

Using branded tablets to descale your coffee machine is a simple and quick process. To clean, you need to find a small round hole in the dispenser area and insert a Jura descaling tablet into it. Next, just press the “Descale” button and the coffee machine will do the whole process. This cleaning takes about 20 minutes. If you do not use a Jura water purification filter, you will have to repeat this procedure regularly.

Jura filters or Jura descaling tablets – Which is better?

Jura filters or Jura descaling tablets – Which is better?

Purchasing and renting a Jura coffee machine is an expensive pleasure in itself. And if you are already the proud owner of equipment from this brand, then you know its high cost. For this reason alone (among others), it is so important to know how much it will cost you to service your coffee machine.

In addition to the necessary maintenance, the lifespan of your equipment will largely depend on two other important factors that were taken into account by the developers of Jura - the quality of the coffee and water used.

In this article, you will review two branded cleaning products for Jura coffee machines - water filters and descaling tablets. Let’s discuss what is better – “prevention or treatment.”

Jura filters

Filter Jura Claris Smart Gray

Jura coffee machines are suitable for Blue, White or Smart models from the Claris branded water filter series. Thanks to modern RFID (radio frequency recognition) technology, some models of coffee machines can display information about the need to replace the filter or send such a notification to the user’s mobile phone.

Filters perform an extremely necessary function - with their help, unwanted contaminants are removed from the water, which significantly impair the quality of the prepared coffee. The developers of Jura were initially determined to create a machine for making the perfect coffee, so they attached special importance to the issue of using a filter and replacing it. The user needs to view the options displayed on the coffee machine display and when reaching the “Filter” option, select the desired option. By selecting “No,” you will tell your machine that you are not using a filter (even if it needs replacing), and you will no longer be prompted to replace the filter in the future. In fact, you shouldn't neglect the filter and create problems for yourself in the future - not having a filter will negatively affect the life of your coffee machine.

On average, each Jura filter, over its service life (before replacement with a new one), is capable of adequately filtering the amount of water required to prepare approximately 350 cups of coffee.

Jura descaling tablets

If you haven't used a Jura filter or haven't reset the settings because it's missing, then you'll probably need to deal with scale build-up.

In addition to the lack of a filter, the use of water with a high content of minerals, calcium or fluoride contributes to the formation of scale in the coffee machine. Therefore, a thorough descaling will be necessary before any of the resulting deposits end up in your coffee cup.

Using descaling tablets is quite easy. To do this, you just need to insert the tablet in the dispenser area - into the small round hole next to the coffee bean container, and then press the “Descale” button. The cleaning process will take about 20 minutes. This procedure is extremely necessary if you do not use Jura filters for water purification.

Conclusion: Which is better - water filters or anti-scale tablets?

In practice, it has been proven that prevention is almost always better than treatment. Using Jura water filters will save you a lot of problems in the future, although it will cost a little more. However, owners of coffee machines should not exclude the use of anti-scale tablets (unfortunately, even those who use filters). If you use a water filter, you will need to descale your machine once every few months.

Remember, the cleaning features are there to make the best coffee possible, not to make your life harder.
